
Department of Economics I is chaired by
Professor Marek Góra, who has been affiliated with the Warsaw School of Economics since the beginning of his academic career. He graduated in 1984, defended his doctoral dissertation in 1988, received his habilitation degree in 1996, and was awarded with the title of professor in 2004. Professor Góra teaches macroeconomics, labor economics, pension economics, health economics, and economic and social policy. He also used to be affiliated with the Institute of Econometrics (1984–1993) where he taught courses in econometrics and forecasting.
His long career at the Warsaw School of Economics has been intertwined with visiting positions at other universities (Erasmus University Rotterdam, London School of Economics), research institutes (Ifo Institute for Economic Research, Munich), and international organizations (OECD).
Marek Góra is the author of many articles in Polish and international journals, especially in labor economics and pension economics. He has participated in many international research projects. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the
European Association of Labour Economists (EALE) from 1990 to 1997. He is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) and a member of the
Council of Advisors at Population Europe.
Marek Góra links his research experience to practice. He was the co-author of the Polish pension reform from 1999, which made Poland one of a small number of countries which are believed to have successfully coped with the economic consequences of aging.
